The Octopus and the Orangutan: More True Tales of Animal Intrigue, Intelligence, and Ingenuity
Eugene Linden

Stories of animal resourcefulness take another turn in Eugene Linden’s The Octopus and the Orangutan: More True Tales of Animal Intrigue, Intelligence, and Ingenuity. A follow-up to the acclaimed Parrot’s Lament, Linden’s new book conveys the craftiness, cleverness and outright inventiveness of animals in captivity: Octopuses that pick locks, orangutans that mastermind food thefts and an elephant that can summon her daily shower with a nod to her elephant comrades. Although Linden notes that these anecdotes are not "science," he presents compelling evidence of animals’ higher faculties.
